Welcome!
My name is John Hallman, and this is my blog. I mostly write about AI, technology, and business, though at times I touch on economic and political issues as well.
Who am I? Well, I’m currently a member of technical staff at OpenAI, working on miscellaneous problems on the applied research team. Prior to OpenAI I worked at a couple different AI startups (AKASA, Sisu Data) as a machine learning engineer, primarily focusing on trying to automate various tasks across enterprises and industries. Before that I was a student at Princeton studying math, and also worked as a research intern at Google Brain.
I grew up in Sweden to a Swedish father and a Japanese mother, and so any issues or topics touching on race, multiculturalism, immigration, and language are very dear to me. I also competed internationally in math and figure skating back in my youth, having represented Sweden at the 2012 figure skating youth olympic games, and the 2016 international mathematical olympiad.
If anything I mentioned above speaks to you, don’t hesitate to DM me here on Substack! And, if any of my writing interests you, please do feel free to subscribe!
